The links on this page will help you with the following information:

  • Tickets - cheapest prices, how to obtain them and ticket types explained
  • Eurostar departure times from London to Paris, Brussels and Lille and optimum connections to other popular destinations
  • Suggestions for smoothing out connections

Eurostar beyond Brussels/Bruxelles and Paris

Eurostar is also the rail link between London and anywhere else in Europe.

Connect at Brussels/Bruxelles (Midi) station for direct trains to Amsterdam, Cologne/Koln and Luxembourg and destinations across Belgium.

Connect at Lille (Europe) for other major French cities including Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseilles, Montpellier and Nice - it's often quicker to travel via Paris, but connecting at Lille is easier - particularly if you have luggage.
There are also direct trains from Lille to western Belgium including Antwerp, Bruges and Gent - though you have to walk to Lille (Flandres) station from Lille (Europe) station, where the Eurostars arrive.

In Paris the Eurostars arrive at the Gare Du Nord, but if you're happy to cross Paris by metro, RER or taxi to its other main line stations, then you can travel on to all other major cities in France, as well as Germany (Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich); Italy and Switzerland!

THE TRAINS

Eurostar trains have three classes of accommodation

Unlike any other train in Europe passengers have to check-in for Eurostar trains (and pass through passport control). Standard and Standard Premier ticket

holders must pass through the check in desk at the entrance to the departure lounge a minimum of 30 minutes before the departure of the train.
Business Premier ticket holders can pass through an automated check-in facility up to 10mins prior to the departure of the train.

DISCOUNTED TICKETS BETWEEN LONDON AND GERMANY

Deutsche-Bahn (German National Railways) offers a great deal for travelling between London and Germany by train with its London Spezial London to Germany tickets.

With a fixed price of €59 (current at January 2013) to travel from London to ANY destination in Germany, these tickets enable significant savings to be made in comparison to booking a separate Eurostar tickets and then another ticket for onward train travel into Germany.
In other words this a a great travel deal!

If you’re planning a rail pass adventure that includes London and Germany, it can be a cheaper option to use your rail pass for other journeys, but book a ‘Europa-Spezial’ ticket (using the link above) for the train travel between Germany and London, particularly if you’re planning on starting or finishing a rail pass tour in London!

An additional advantage of a Europa-Spezial ticket is that you have 48 hrs to complete the journey one way, so you can spend a night in Brussels or a German city such as Cologne/Koln, and continue your journey the next day.

This tips the balance in favour of using a ‘Europa Spezial’ at the start/end of a rail pass trip if you also want to visit Brussels/Bruxelles on your itinerary.

If you want to see another city in Belgium you’ll have to buy a separate (comparatively cheap) ticket to make the straightforward journey(s) to the likes of Antwerp, Bruges or Gent. These tickets won’t add significantly to your overall travel budget.

Europa –Spezial tickets are NOT valid in on the Thalys THA trains between Brussels Midi station and Cologne/Koln or Aachen - in normal circumstances
They are only valid on the ICE trains between Brussels Midi and and Cologne/Koln or Aachen.
However, when a connecting Eurostar train is delayed and you miss the advertised connection, then you will be allowed on a Thalys.

ThereByTrain's understanding had been that the 'Europa Spezial' ticket was not valid on Thalys in any circumstances and that was the experience of a correspondent who had a letter printed in the July 2013 issue of Today's Rail magazine.
They were told by the Thalys desk at Bruxelles (Midi) that their 'Eurpoa Spezial' ticket was not valid on the Thalys.
However, in reply to this correspondent, D-Bahn says that the ticket is definitely valid on the Thalys train in the event of a delay to the Eurostar under the conditions of the 'RailTeam Alliance' and all Thalys staff at Bruxelles (Midi) station have now been made aware of this.

Unfortunately the connections between Eurostar and ICE trains when travelling FROM London TO Germany are not particularly convenient.
IF the Eurostar is on time you have 17-20 mins to make connections into the subsequent ICE departure.
A straight-forward transfer when the Eurostar arrives in time, but if ThereByTrain was to book a Europa-Spezial ticket we’d think twice about being able to make the transfer on to the specific train (with a rail pass we’d definitely take the chance).

An alternative is to make use of the 48hr facility and spend the night in Brussels, at no additional rail travel cost, or take an earlier Eurostar to Brussels.

An alternative to making connections by day train in Brussels is to book a ‘Europa Spezial’ ticket to obtain a discounted rate using the Eurostar between London and Paris and the direct City Night Line CNL overnight train between Paris and Augsburg, Berlin, Hamburg, Hannover and Munich.

This a good alternative if any of these apply to you:
1 - you’re planning to travel between London and these cities in Germany and want to avoid the (tight) connections at Brussels
2 - would rather not change trains 3x (you need to change trains again in Cologne to travel to/from, any of these cities)
3 - you’d rather travel overnight on a train than spend a night in a hotel in Brussels or Cologne.

However, the disadvantage of using a Europa Spezial ticket to travel on the CNL train between Paris and Germany is the awkward connection in Paris.
Eurostar trains arrive at/depart from Gare Du Nord station in Paris, while the City Night Line (CNL) train departs from the Gare De L’Est station in Paris.
It’s a 5-10 min walk from one station to the other, but it involves a flight of stairs.
However, walking is quicker than taking the metro the one stop between the two mainline stations once you have factored in the time to transfer to/from the trains.

London to beyond Paris, Brussels and Lille - tips for Eurostar connections

You don't have to only travel by train from London/(Ebbsfleet and Ashford) to Brussels/Bruxelles, Lille and Paris by Eurostar, it's possible to travel on to 100s of destinations across Europe by train.
The connections aren't always as simple as they theoretically could be, but Germany and The Netherlands are less than five hours by train from London , Switzerland is less than seven hours away, as is virtually every city in France - and of purse connections are city centre to city centre.

Read on for our unique insight into changing trains to/from Eurostars in Paris, Brussels and Lille.
We also show how to make trips from London involving multiple trains to the most popular destinations in Europe beyond France, Belgium and The Netherlands.
Finally, there's some extra info that may prove useful if you want to travel by train from London to Amsterdam, Avignon, Bordeaux, Cologne and Figueres/(Spain).

London to cities across Europe by train

How to travel by train from London to Alicante; Barcelona, Basel; Bologna; Brig; Budapest; Chur; Copenhagen, Florence; Geneva; Genoa; Hamburg; Lausanne; Ljubljana; Lucerne; Madrid; Malaga; Milan, Munich; Prague; Rome; Salzburg; Valencia; Venice; Verona; Vienna; Warsaw; Zagreb and Zurich is on THIS PAGE THESE ARE GUIDE TIMES AS THE TIMETABLE HAS BEEN UPDATED SINE WE PUBLISHED IT, BUT IT WILL GIVE AN IDEA OF THE CONNECTIONS THAT ARE POSSIBLE AND THE LENGTH OF THE JOURNEYS.

Making connections in Paris

The disadvantage of changing trains in Paris is the need to transfer between stations in the French capital.
Eurostars arrive at/depart from the Gare Du Nord, but it's simpler to make connections at Lille if you're travelling to/from any destination in Northern France.

First you need to know which of the other main stations in Paris that the train to your final destination will be departing from/arriving at.
You can look this up on ThereByTrain's unique guide HERE
When you then click the 'stations' header on the guide, you'll be taken to our guide to Paris stations, which includes of information on how to travel between these stations and the Gare Du Nord by RER (commuter trains) and Metro.

Of course if you have heavy luggage, or can afford the time to risk being stuck in a Parisian traffic jam, then a taxi is always an option.
If possible try to avoid the Metro in rush hours and in summer both the metro and RER can be very hot and stuffy.

You can often save the hassle of crossing Paris by changing trains in Lille (see below), but it's usually faster to travel via Paris (connections at Lille aren't the best) and there are also more frequent trains to where you want to go from Paris than there are from Lille.

ThereByTrain's London - Paris times below, have our pick of the best connections when transferring between trains in Paris - hopefully they'll save you a lot of time in planning a journey.

Making connections in Lille

Lille built a new station for the Eurostar trains and called it Lille (Europe).
So that it lives up to its name the TGVs from Lille to other destinations in France, mainly also depart from/arrive at Lille (Europe) station.
Across the platform from the where the Eurostar arrives there will on occasion be a TGV tantalizingly waiting to depart for some distant destination in France.
Don't expect to be able to perform the simple task of crossing the platform to board the TGV, the UK's border policy means you have to go up the escalators to clear customs and then come back down again!

Despite the bright idea of getting Eurostars and TGVs to share the same station in Lille, Eurostar and French rail operator SNCF never seem to manage to communicate with other very effectively.
Which, as our unique 'London to Lille' connections below demonstrate, means that traveller's often have to spend more than an hour hanging around in the somewhat stark station between trains.
Lille Europe station can also be startling cold in the winter and aside from a few basic cafés there are a lack of waiting rooms (Eurostar business premier tickets have access to a dedicated lounge.
If you don't have heavy luggage, have more than 90 mins to wait between trains and the weather is amenable, ThereByTrain's advice is to leave the station and follow the signs to Lille Flandres station. Within 10 mins you'll be in an area of Lille city centre with cafés and restaurants etc.

Changing at Lille and not Paris is a personal preference and often involves a longer journey overall in order to avoid the hassle of crossing Paris from one station to another.
There are direct TGV high speed trains between Lille and many towns and cities across France, including:
Angers; Angouleme*; Antibes; Avignon; Beziers; Bordeaux*; Cannes; Dijon; Lyon; Marseilles; Montpellier; Nantes; Narbonne; Nice; Nimes; Perpignan; Poitiers*; Rennes; St Raphael and Valence.
The best of these connections are included on the 'London to Lille' departures below.

*=Trains to these destinations don't depart from Lille (Europe) station, instead they depart from Lille's other main station, the older city centre station, Lille (Flandres).
It's a 5-10 min walk from Lille (Europe) station, so not far away enough away to justify a taxi, but enough of a walk to be a nuisance if you have heavy luggage; small children; aren't as mobile as you once were; or it's pouring with rain.

Lille (Flandres) station also has direct trains to/from other destinations in northern France including: Amiens; Arras; Cambrai; Dunkerque and Rouen.
Plus there are hourly trains over the border to/from Belgian towns including Charleroi; Gent; Kortrijk (change for Ypres/Ieper); Mons and Namur.
There are also regular trains from Lille (Flandres) to/from Antwerp/Anvers and a couple of trains per day to/from Bruges/Brugge.

Making connections in Brussels/Bruxelles.

Eurostar trains arrive at depart from/arrive at Bruxelles (Midi) station.
There are direct trains between Bruxelles (Midi) and virtually any other Belgian town/city including a minimum of two trains an hour to the likes of Antwerp; Brugge/Bruges; Gent; Leuven and Liege - so don't let the fact that it's a contender for Europe's most ugly station put you off making full use of it.

You can also travel beyond Belgium, there are direct trains between Bruxelles (Midi) and:

  • Aachen (ICE and Thalys trains)
  • Amsterdam* (Thalys trains)
  • Cologne/Koln* (ICE and Thalys trains)
  • Frankfurt (Main) and Frankfurt Airport (ICE trains)
  • Luxembourg (EC and IC trains)
  • Rotterdam (IC trains on Mon-Fri only; and Thalys trains)
  • The Hague/Den Haag (IC trains on Mon-Fri only)

* = there's more information about travelling to/from these destinations below.

What there aren't is any overnight trains, they stopped operating to/from Brussels/Bruxelles some years ago!

Travelling to/from Amsterdam

To travel from London to Amsterdam by train and v.v. you have to change trains at Brussels/Bruxelles (Midi).
Try not to left that put you off making the trip it’s usually a comparatively hassle-free journey – though there’s room for improvement.

The only direct trains currently operating between Brussels/Bruxelles and Amsterdam are the Thalys (THA) trains, so using them is the only option if you want to make only one change of train.
Good news is that the Thalys uses high speed lines for most of the journey, so it’s fast – Brussels – Amsterdam in 1hr 49mins!
Less good news: – the connections in Brussels between Eurostar arrivals and Thalys departures aren’t always the best; particularly if you want to leave London in the morning to maximise the time you’ll have in Amsterdam!

To avoid waiting in Brussels for more than an hour take the (12:58 - daily; 15:04 & 17:04 – not Sat) Eurostars from London to Brussels/Bruxelles.

Where it gets a tad complicated is the tickets - you can’t book journeys involving the Eurostar AND Thalys together on Eurostar.com, but they can be purchased as one journey on this comparatively simple to use website.

FYRA trains would have revolutionized travel on this route; better connections at Brussels/Bruxelles, cheaper than the Thalys, nearly as fast, but they’ve had to be withdrawn permanently due to technical problems, so for the time being taking Thalys is the best option.

You can also use this website. to book tickets for the cheaper, but slower and less convenient alternative to the Thalys trains.
On Mon-Fri there are IC trains from Brussels to Rotterdam and at Rotterdam connections are available to frequent trains to/from Amsterdam.
There will hopefully once again be direct IC trains operating daily between Brussels/Bruxelles and Amsterdam after Dec 9th 2013.

Travelling to/from Avignon

On Saturdays in summer there’s the convenient direct Eurostar between London and this gateway to Provence, but on every other day of the year there are three options for train travel between London and Avignon.

Avignon has two stations:
(1) Avignon (Centre) - which lives up to its name by having a convenient location, and
(2) Avignon (TGV) - which is on the high speed line on the city’s southern edge, a shuttle bus ride from the city centre.

Option 1 – connect in Paris for Avignon (Centre) – available on Mon-Fri only
Take the 07:01 train from London to Paris (Du Nord), transfer to the Gare De Lyon by RER train and take the 11:19 train to Avignon (Centre), it leaves the high speed line an hour before arriving, so doesn’t call at the Avignon (TGV) station.

Option 2 – connect in Paris for Avignon (TGV)
The fastest option! Travel from London to Avignon by train in around only 6 hours, arrive at the Gare Du Nord, transfer to the Gare De Lyon in Paris on the RER, and take a train from there to Avignon (TGV) station - and then the shuttle bus.
Fastest journey options involve departing from St Pancras (International) at 07:01 on Mon-Fri; 11:01 on Saturday and 15:01 on Sunday.

Option 3 – connect in Lille for Avignon (TGV)
There aren’t any direct trains from Lille to Avignon (Centre), but you can save the hassle of travelling across Paris by talking a direct train from Lille (Europe) to Avignon (TGV).
If you take the 12:58 Eurostar from London and connect into the 16:02 TGV from Lille Europe, then this option is only 20 mins (ish) slower than the faster connections via Paris!

Travelling to/from Bordeaux (and Angouleme and Poitiers)

In common with the majority of major French cities, when travelling from London to Bordeaux by train you can choose between changing trains in Lille, or transferring between stations in Paris in order to continue the journey.

The Lille option generally has the advantage of avoiding the hassle of transferring between stations in Paris, particularly if you’re travelling with heavy luggage, children, large parties etc.
That has to be offset against:
(1) fewer connections to choose from,
(2) the fact that Lille (Europe) is not the most scintillating of environments to wait for a train and
(3) it can be more expensive than travelling via Paris (Eurostar doesn’t charge any more for travelling on to Paris than go Lille, but tickets between Lille and other cities in France are generally more expensive than those from/to Paris).
(4) connections between Eurostars and TGVs can be frustrating, so it’s usually quicker to travel via Paris.

However when travelling from London to Bordeaux, Poitiers and Angouleme by train there is another consideration to consider.
TGVs from Lille to Bordeaux don’t depart from Lille (Europe) station, which is where the Eurostars arrive/depart, instead they depart the city centre station, Lille (Flandres).

This might tip the balance on the what is the least/most hassle options, it’s a 7mins (ish) walk between Lille (Europe) and Lille (Flandres) stations.
Whether this is better choice than taking a taxi from the Gare Du Nord to Gare Montparnasse in Paris, OR making the journey across Paris between the two stations on the generally crowded Metro Line 4, is up to you.

Travelling to/from Cologne/Koln

To travel between London and Cologne/Koln by train you need to change trains at Brussels/Bruxelles(Midi) station.

What can can confusion is that there are two different types of high speed train on the journey between Brussels/Bruxelles and Cologne/Koln, the ICE or the Thalys (THA) trains - that travel the same high speed route with a journey time of only 1hr 47mins!

The next departure from Bruxelles (Midi), after the arrival of the Eurostar, will be an ICE OR a Thalys, the ICE and Thalys trains alternate and there are gaps of at least two hours between trains, irrespective of which of the two types of train is next to depart.

If making the journey in the fastest possible time; or departing from London at a time that suits you are top of your priority list, then call Eurostar’s booking line on 08432 186 186 (08432186186) and they’ll guide you through the options, involving ICE or Thalys depending on when you want to leave/arrive.

Things can tad more complicated if saving money is at the top of your priority list – prices can vary between the ICE and Thalys trains and on the connecting Eurostars – a Eurostar and ICE journey can be cheaper/more expensive than a Eurostar/Thalys combination.

If you can book in time, the cheapest option of all is usually the ‘London Spezial’ tickets sold HERE - they’re only valid on the ICE, but there’s more information about them above - click the 'Discounted Tickets; between London and Germany header.
A complication is that when travelling from London To Cologne by train, the majority of the most convenient connections at Bruxelles (Midi) are from/to the Thalys trains.

If 'London Spezial tickets have sold out then our advice is to;
1: Call Eurostar’s booking line and obtain a quote for the entire journey
2 : Look up the Eurostar prices for the journey to/from Brussels/Bruxelles on the Eurostar website.
3: Look up the price of the Thalys train HERE
4: Look up the prices of ICE trains HERE.

Work out the cheapest combination and return to whichever booking option had the cheapest tickets.

Travelling to/from Figueres

A friend with a fear of flying travels regularly from London to the Costa Brava.
I told them that they didn’t have to travel overnight from Paris to Barcelona because there were direct day trains (TGVs) from Paris to Figueres.
They thought it was a great idea, but when I asked them about the journey on their return, they told me that they’d hired a car at Perpignan.
They couldn’t find the tickets for Figueres on the Eurostar site, didn’t know where they could be booked and couldn’t get hold of me when they were making the booking.

Tickets to Figueres and other destinations outside France, that are served by direct high speed trains from/to Paris, including Milan/Milano; Turin/Torino; Mannheim; Karlsruhe and Stuttgart cannot be booked on Eurostar.com.
Tickets between Paris and these destinations can be booked on SNCF.com HEREand tickets for the Eurostar trains between Paris and London need to be booked separately HERE

Notes for Paris Connections

The Paris connections above are based upon therebytrain.com's recommendations for following transfer times to other Paris stations from Gare Du Nord:

  • 50 mins to Gare De Lyon; Take RER Line D (direction Melun and Malesherbes)
  • 30 mins to Gare De l'Est; Walking time is approximately 10-15 minutes. Directions are available here Passengers with luggage should note that a flight of steps have to be walked down on arrival at Gare De L’Est.
  • 50 mins to Montparnasse; Take Metro line 4 (direction Porte d’Orleans)
  • 1 hour to Austerlitz; Take Metro Line 5 (direction Place D’Italie)
  • More information including links to maps of the stations is available on the therebytrain Paris Station Guide

Travellers who regularly connect between trains across Paris may consider these suggested transfer times to be generous, with good connections it

is

possible to depart from Gare De Lyon only 30mins after arrival at Gare Du Nord.

Therebytrain.com has recommended these transfer times for travellers who are not familiar with the layout of these large stations, but these

suggested

connection times don't allow for the Eurostar to be more than 5-10 mins late on arrival or for delays on Paris public transport.

If the Eurostar is running late and you're making a connection across Paris it's a good idea to move to the front of the train before arrival at

Gare Du

Nord.
Eurostar trains are very long and there is only one exit from the platform at Gare Du Nord, which is at the front of the train.

These transfer times do not allow time to queue at booking offices at

Paris stations to purchase tickets. Ticket machines are available, but you can take

some of the stress out of the transfer by booking in advance (you're also likely to save money.)

Through tickets to the majority of destinations in

France are available on the Eurostar booking page.
Eurostar sells tickets for onward travel to all the destinations in France and Switzerland listed above, click 'all destinations' on the

href="http://www.eurostar.com/dynamic/_SvBoAvailabilityTravelCriteriaTerm?

_TMS=1308646186668&_DLG=SvBoAvailabilityTravelCriteriaTerm&_LANG=UK&_AGENCY=ESTAR">booking form.
If you have already booked a Eurostar ticket,

tickets

for TGV, Lyria and Artesia high speed trains from Paris can be booked here

LONDON TO BRUSSELS/AMSTERDAM/COLOGNE(KOLN) ON SUNDAY until Dec 14th

The FYRA trains that were introduced in December 2012 on the Brussels/Bruxelles - Amsterdam route have now been permanently withdrawn

On Sundays the only direct trains between Brussels and Amsterdam currently are the Thalys (THA) trains, the alternative FYRA replacement connections to Amsterdam involve changing trains at both Antwerp AND Rotterdam.
Details of how to do this are available HERE under the trains 'from Belgium to The Netherlands' header.

Notes For Making Connections At Brussels (Midi)

Exiting from Eurostar arrivals

Eurostar trains are very long and generally convey hundreds of passengers on each service. There is only one exit from Eurostar arrivals at Midi station with access to taxis, trams, metro and the main departure hall at the station. It is at the front of the train and queues of travellers can quickly build for the lifts/escalators – the Eurostar platforms are at an upper level.

If you don’t have luggage it is easier and faster to use the steps down to the main concourse at the station.
Passport and customs checks for the Eurostar trains are normally carried out prior to boarding the trains in the UK.

If you’re connecting into a train that’s departing 10-25 minutes later than the arrival of the Eurostar train you should be able to make the connection (regular users of the station can make connections of 5-10mins). However, you’ll need to avoid those queues that can build up at the main Eurostar exit and a long walk down the platform.

Halfway along the Eurostar platform there is an exit marked 'Aansluitingen'/'Correspondence' which is a subway link to the other platforms at Midi.
The subway has indicators which tell you the next train(s) departing from each platform as well as paper timetables listing all subsequent departures.
If you’re fairly confident about your ability to find the connecting train you require, have a good idea that you won’t be waiting on a platform for too long for a train (it can be more than an hour between the arrival of a Eurostar and the departure of a ‘connecting’ Thalys’ or ‘ICE’ train) and don’t need/want to purchase refreshments before boarding your next train, then use this exit.
You can be on any other platform within the large station within 5 minutes, though you’ll need to negotiate two flights of stairs.

However if you’re travelling in the front third of the Eurostar it will be easier to use the main exit (if you don’t you’ll find yourself travelling in the opposite direction to the tide of people heading towards the main exit).

Also use the main exit if :

  • you’d like to access additional information about your connecting train, in the main passage way in the station you’ll find information desks.
  • you want to purchase food/drink or have a meal before taking your next train (food and drink cannot be purchased on many trains within Belgium)
  • have time to kill before your connecting train departs

If you want to use the main exit and your connecting train departs within 20mins of the arrival at Midi station it is a good idea to move towards the front of the Eurostar train a few minutes before it arrives in Brussels, - the train will begin to slow down as it reaches the city centre.
You’ll then avoid the queues that can build up at the main exit.

Making connections

When connecting into trains to other Belgian stations and Luxembourg, your onward travel ticket will not be

train specific

and the next train will depart in no more than an hour, if you happen to miss a tightly timed connection.

However, if you're connecting into Thalys trains your ticket will be train specific, and its more than likely to be train specific for ICE

trains.
If you have a discounted ticket for the Thalys and ICE and you miss the connecting Eurostar through a fault of 'your own' such as arriving too late to check in at St Pancras International; it's likely that you will have to pay additional charges if you miss the ICE or Thalys train.
Check the terms

and conditions

on your ticket, if you have to re-book on to another ICE or Thalys due to a delay on the Eurostar then your costs of doing so SHOULD be covered by the terms of the Railteam Alliance

Rail pass users connections to Germany

href="http://www.therebytrain.com/default.aspx/tickets_and_passes/Buy_InterRail_passes">InterRail passes are valid on the ICE trains without

payment of a supplement. There is therefore no need

for rail pass holders to book through tickets from London to Cologne on the Eurostar site.

Travel to central Brussels

Tickets to Brussels (Midi) can be used for onward travel into central Brussels.
If your hotel/final destination is near Centraal, Luxembourg or

Nord stations,

your cheapest and quickest option for onward travel to your final destination is likely to be taking a train from Midi station.

Connecting for Antwerp

Avoid the FYRA (and Thalys) trains when connecting on to Antwerp.
Tickets are likely to be more expensive on the Fyra and Thalys trains and the travel time by the other fast connections is only marginally slower - there is no high speed line between Brusssels and Antwerp.
The fastest Belgian 'IC' trains to Antwerp depart from Brussels/Bruxelles (Midi) at:

  • 28 and 56 mins past each hour during the day on Mon-Fri
  • 33 and 59 mins past each hour during the day on Sat/Sun
Connecting for Liege

The

href="http://www.therebytrain.com/default.aspx/types_of_train_in_Europe/About_trains_in_Germany">ICE and Thalys trains to

Germany also call at Liege, but there are other frequent trains between Brussels and Liege.
Eurostar 'any Belgian station' tickets cannot be used on Thalys trains to Antwerp and Liege or ICE trains to Liege.
The fastest* Belgian 'IC' trains to Liege depart from Brussels/Bruxelles (Midi) at:

  • 31 and 57* mins past each hour during the day on Mon-Fri
  • 36 and 57 mins past each hour during the day on Sat/Sun

*= These trains take the high speed line and have a journey time of 1hr 3mins, the other trains have a journey time of 1hr 24mins.

THE DIRECT TRAIN TO AVIGNON

In 2013 the period in which the Saturdays only direct Eurostar train between London (St Pancras International) and Avignon (Centre) is being greatly extended.
The service will operate on 26 Saturdays in 2013, an increase on the 10 days on which the train operated in 2012.
According to the Thomas Cook European Rail Timetable, in 2013 the Eurostar train will operate between London and Avignon/Provence every Saturday from April 20th to October 5th and in the opposite direction to London from Apr 27th to Oct 12th.

The train will depart from London (St Pancras International) at 07:17 and Ashford (International) at 07:55.
It will arrive in Avignon (Centre) at 13:53.

In the other direction it will depart from Avignon (Centre) at 16:27 and arrive in Ashford (International) at 20:37 and London (St Pancras International) at 21:11.

The journey time between London and Avignon is 5hr 36mins.

As it name implies Avignon (Centre) is adjacent to the heart of the city and is therefore much more convenient when travelling to Avignon itself than Avignon (TGV)

station which is outside of the city.

As suggested by the name of the station, TGVs for onward travel from Avignon to Marseilles, Toulon and The French Riviera including Nice, depart from Avignon (TGV)

and not Avignon (Centre).
A shuttle bus operates between Avignon (Centre) and Avignon (TGV)
For this reason it can be easier to make connections in Lille or Paris when travelling between London and Marseilles.
There are no convenient connections at Avignon between the direct Eurostar train and TGVs to/from Nimes, Montpellier, Beziers, Narbonne and Perpignan .

Direct onward connections are possible to/from the Eurostar train at Avignon (Centre).
There are slow, but scenic, local /regional trains between Avignon (Centre) and multiple other destinations including Arles, Beziers, Marseilles, Mirimas, Montpellier, Narbonne and Nimes.
We'll add details of these connections when the French timetable is published for 2013.

USING ST PANRCRAS INTERNATIONAL

Our unique tips for using St Pancras are:

  • St Pancras International station has a website.
  • St Pancras station is one of the largest buildings in Europe, so we advise taking a look at this station map. We refer to it below
  • Allow sufficient time when catching a Eurostar train particularly if you're travelling on a non-flexible or semi-flexible ticket. The station is located in one of most congested traffic areas in London and it can be a lengthy walk from an arriving underground train to the Eurostar check-in desk.
  • When arriving by taxi specify that you're taking a Eurostar train, there are several drop off areas at the station, but there is a specific Eurostar 'taxi drop off area that is adjacent to the Eurostar check-in desks
  • If you enter the station by this 'taxi drop off entrance' the Eurostar check-in area is immediately to the right, but all other facilities in the station are ahead of you on the main concourse. If you need the Eurostar ticket desk it is to the left when you reach the main concourse.
  • Unlike an airport departure lounge, shopping and catering facilities are limited once you have passed through check-in in the Eurostar departure lounge.
  • If you want a meal prior to boarding the Eurostar or want to take food and drink on board with you (it's cheaper than using the food counter in the buffet on the train), purchase food and drink from one of the numerous food outlets in the station BEFORE going through check-in.
  • Don't forget to observe the minimum check-in times, particularly if queues are building up, but if you have additional time available don't spend it in the Eurostar departure area, it can be crowded, facilities are limited and seats are quickly taken.
  • There isn't any access to check-in from the upper level of the station (where the trains are).
